The tournament history

The dream of holding an international tennis tournament in Miami started in the 1960s. A group of players toured the country in a station wagon, playing tennis in darkened arenas and fairgrounds.  However, it was a little before the days of the Open Tennis.  The original member of the “Handsome Eight”, Buchholz, was one of the first to support the sport. He competed until he had to retire from tennis in the 70s  due to chronic tennis elbow.

In 1980, Buchholz as an executive director of the ATP ( Association of Tennis Professionals) met the vice president of the Thomas J. Lipton. They talked about the idea of creating a two-week players tournament, which was promptly appreciated by the latter.  At that time they decided that the first tournament would be held at Laver’s International Tennis Resort in Delray Beach, 50 miles north of Miami. The rest is history. Since then,  the biggest names in tennis have competed at the Miami Open.  Over the years, fans have watched Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Novak Djokovic, Steffi Graf, Roger Federer, Gustavo Kuerten have stepped on its courts.

Hard Rock Stadium

After such a long time at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, it finally moved to the Hard Rock Stadium. The new stadium offers better parking, larger spaces, and an elevated top experience. Tennis fans can enjoy the same luxury that the Miami Dolphins football fans are used to enjoying.

This year’s fans can expect a stadium court with 13,800 seats and 360-degree LED signs, which provides an extraordinary entertainment experience. Conversely, there are also additional seats on the outer courts, including a new Butch Buchholz Court with a seating capacity of 3,500. In short, there’s plenty of room for those coming to attend it.
