When we think of Florida, Miami and Orlando always come to mind. But be sure to discover new destinations and enjoy the surroundings. The Florida Keys are formed by more than a thousand islands. There are five groups: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Lower Keys and Key West, which is 160 miles from Miami.
Exploring the Upper Keys: Key Largo, Islamorada and Marathon
The spectacular Florida Keys are located on the southern tip of Florida. While much attention is paid to the legendary Key West, there are a number of incredible attractions awaiting in the Upper Keys. Which include vacation destinations like Key Largo, Islamorada and Marathon.
Key Largo is home to the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater park in the US, where the coral reef is one of the most popular locations to explore. Kayaking and canoeing are very popular sports here, as is fishing in designated areas.
To see the only living coral reef in the country, you can join one of the boat trips. Another option is to go snorkeling or diving in this impressive underwater environment. You will see barracudas, turtles, and a variety of colorful fish. Also, try to go kayaking, swimming or cycling in this fantastic park.
When you are planning your Florida Keys vacation, add another mandatory place to the list. Located two hours south of Miami, Islamorada (“purple island”) was named by Spanish explorers who were amazed by the purple sky at sunset and the purple bougainvillea. In the Theater of the Sea marine park, you can swim with dolphins and sea lions, see sea turtles and watch parrot shows. Another mandatory stop is at Robbie’s marina, where you can feed tarpon directly from the pier.
Nice parks
Hiking enthusiasts will love strolling through Long Key State Park and climbing to the observation tower’s top to enjoy panoramic views. In addition to these attractions, be sure to check out the fishing rental boats available in Islamorada, known as the “world capital of sport fishing”. For sure, amateur fishermen will have a lot of fun here. At the end of the day, enjoy fresh seafood on the beach, and a colorful sunset during a romantic dinner in the Morada Bay restaurant.
In Marathon, a stunning piece of Florida that is ideal for families, you will find the iconic Seven Mile Bridge. Stop at the museum in Pigeon Key to learn about the construction of the Overseas Railway and the workers who lived there. In Marathon, visit the incredible Dolphin Research Center and Turtle Hospital, which are amazing ecological attractions, perfect for families and animal lovers.
Lower Keys in Florida: Bahia Honda and Big Pine Key
There is nothing like the tropical island climate of the Lower Florida Keys, including Bahia Honda State Park, Big Pine Key and, of course, the famous Key West. Bahia Honda State Park has spectacular beaches, lovely trails amidst nature. In addition to incredible camping sites facing the sea at Sandspur Beach and Campground. You can snorkel at the Looe Key Coral Reef, part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
At Big Pine Key, be very careful with the endangered Key’s small deer at the National Key Deer Refuge. This is the only place in the world where the tiny deer can be found. Especially in Big Pine and No Name Key, making your protection even more important.
Florida Keys vacation: Your journey ends in Key West
The famous Key West marks the journey’s end. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park welcomes visitors with its pristine beaches. Spend the day walking along the charming Emma Street, seeing bicycle-drawn carts or visiting Harry Truman Little White House.
Whatever you do, be sure to go to Mallory Square for a sunset celebration that takes place every day and is full of merchants, acrobats, musicians. For dinner, check out the grilled mahi-mahi at Bo’s Fish Wagon. Then, stroll down the vigorous Duval Street and experience its legendary nightlife.
